Graphic Designer / Production Designer

Position Summary

This position is responsible for creating digital print and cut files, customer proof images, marketing graphics, and 3D visualizations for sign, graphics, and print projects. The Designer works closely with Sales, Production, and Management to create artwork that meets customer specifications and production requirements.

Responsibilities may include creating 3D marketing illustrations for major projects, preparing proof images for customer or regulatory review and approval, and developing digital cut and print files for production. The position may involve varying levels of artistic creativity and may require creating or modifying designs based on customer drawings, files, specifications, or exact reproductions of customer-provided artwork.

The Designer will interact with sales representatives, subcontractors, vendors, and customers to understand project requirements and ensure customer satisfaction. The position will work closely with the Production Manager to ensure the accurate use of design, cut, and print files, including faithful reproduction of product specifications, color matching, sizing, and proper dimensions for installation.

The Designer may also assist Management with purchasing materials to meet project requirements and coordinating project specifications. The Designer will maintain a working knowledge of the company’s computer systems and may provide basic technical support to Management and coordinate with outside IT vendors when necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Prioritize daily design projects to efficiently and cost-effectively manage workflow.
  • Determine the best design and production method based on customer needs and project requirements.
  • Read and interpret work orders according to written instructions and specifications.
  • Work with coworkers and customers regarding file transfers, FTP access, photo libraries, online proofs, and related digital resources.
  • Determine the appropriate size, layout, and arrangement of graphics, illustrations, and copy.
  • Prepare illustrations, sketches, layouts, and copy for print and digital reproduction according to client or supervisor instructions.
  • Allocate appropriate time to each work order based on project complexity and deadlines.
  • Inspect design files for accuracy before sending them to production equipment.
  • Ensure the correct materials are selected for each job and that output device settings are accurate.
  • Process re-cuts, revisions, and reprints as necessary.
  • Maintain customer files through scanning, editing, organizing, and converting graphic files.
  • Source and prepare images for customer projects while understanding copyright, licensing, release, and usage requirements.
  • Research and purchase stock images when appropriate.
  • Work with outside service providers when specialized production or output capabilities are required.
  • Evaluate image resolution and determine appropriate enlargement specifications for production.
  • Prepare customer proofs for review and approval.
  • Maintain organized digital file archives and project records.
  • Maintain communication between design files and production equipment, including computers, plotters, routers, engravers, printers, and other related equipment.
  • Minimize material waste by efficiently utilizing available inventory.
  • Communicate effectively with Sales and Service team members regarding job requirements, deadlines, and special project needs.
  • Communicate with Production personnel regarding job input, output, and production specifications.
  • Communicate inventory and supply needs to the Production Manager or General Manager.
  • Communicate with customers and outside vendors regarding file preparation and conversion requirements.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting established deadlines.
  • Provide production assistance as requested.
  • Follow all company policies, procedures, safety requirements, and business ethics standards.

General Responsibilities

  • Communicate with employees, customers, vendors, and other business partners in a calm, professional, and courteous manner.
  • Clearly communicate project requirements and actively listen to customer and team needs.
  • Continue developing knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and other graphic design, production, and digital imaging software.
  • Stay current on graphic design, digital printing, sign-making, and production techniques through training, webinars, online resources, and independent study.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional design and graphics workspace.
  • Support the company’s sales efforts by identifying opportunities to recommend additional products, services, or solutions to customers.
  • Assist with answering phones and supporting customers when Sales, Management, or other staff members are unavailable.
  • Assist customers at the front counter or through other customer service channels as needed.
  • Develop a working understanding of the sales process and consult with customers to determine project needs and appropriate solutions.
